The Failed War on Drugs

The Failed War on Drugs

At Wyld, we are no strangers to the harm enacted by the failed war on drugs, especially the destruction wrought upon disadvantaged communities. We cannot, in good conscience, profit from the cannabis industry without working to provide reparations to those harmed by cannabis criminalization.

Because of this, Wyld works to:

  • Support restorative justice efforts across the United States
  • Create opportunities supporting historically disadvantaged communities' access to the cannabis industry
  • Reform policies and practices that have criminalized the cannabis industry

Wyld actively works on a state and federal level to protect cannabis regulations, jobs, and consumers.

As part of Wyld’s goal to combat the failed war on drugs we are dedicated to helping with 420 expungements per year - over one a day. These expungements wipe criminal records clean of non-violent cannabis or related charges. Since 2021, Wyld has supported over 1,000 expungements.

In 2022, Wyld sponsored the Oregon Senate Bill 1579. This bill allocates cannabis tax dollars to provide community-based organizations funding to award grants to organizations that supply culturally responsive services to support economic stability, wealth building, and economic equity among disadvantaged individuals, families, businesses, across the state. This includes $15 million to be distributed toward additional support to fund expungements for individuals with petty or cannabis crimes on their records, marking a big win for the cannabis community and a big step in fighting the failed war on drugs in Oregon.

We know that this work is never-ending and are wholly committed to creating positive change within the cannabis industry.

A few of our incredible partners doing the work include:

CLEAR Clinic: CLEAR Clinic aims to help community members reduce barriers to employment, housing, education, and well-being. They are dedicated to increasing access to justice and addressing the lasting impact of disproportionate law enforcement on people of color and low-income communities.

NuProject: NuProject aims to rebalance the detrimental economic impacts of the war on drugs. By providing economic justice grants, loans, and education opportunities, NuProject brings true change to the cannabis industry.

BIPOCANN: BIPOCANN is a BIPOC-led cannabis business membership organization working to shape a more accessible and profitable legal cannabis industry for BIPOC cannabis entrepreneurs, business owners, and professionals.

Root & Rebound: Root & Rebound is focused on transforming power and information from policy and legal communities to the people most impacted by our criminal justice system by restoring power and resources to the families and communities most harmed by mass incarceration through legal advocacy, public education, policy reform, and litigation.
